I loved a woman whose perfume swayed in the air, turning
the modest flowers scarlet and loose
till the jonquils opened their throats and cackled out loud
Arresting stuff and well chosen. But how much more staggering the effect if he’d reversed the roles: When I was a woman sharp as a polished axe . . .
